Here is what users have to say about Cologne

Cologne

Cologne is not one the fourth-largest city in Germany, but also one of the oldest, as it was founded by the Romans in the year 38 BC. Situated on the Rhine River and having one of the oldest universities in Europe, it is a very interesting place with lots of opportunities for sightseeing and with its many young people and students a great place to have fun and spend some great days! And, as it is situated in a very populous area of Germany, other great German cities like Duesseldorf, former capital Bonn, or, the Netherlands.

Sightseeing

One of the most famous sights in Cologne is no doubt the Cologne Cathedral. It has the second tallest church spire in the world, and is enormously impressing because it has not only one, but two spires. So, the picture of the Cologne Cathedral is almost known to everyone! With its unbelievable dimensions and its old gothic structures, Cologne Cathedral is a must-see in Cologne, and a great start to discover the rest of the city, as it lies right in the middle of the city center, and close great shopping opportunities. One other great place to visit is the chocolate museum located on an artificial island in the Rhine River. With its chocolate fountain and cocoa trees it is great to learn, enjoy, and relax!

If you`re into art, especially modern art, you shoud visit the "Museum Ludwig". It shows PopArt as well as expressionism or cubism, and is home to paintings of famous artists like Picasso and Roy Lichtenstein. Another place to have a good time is the zoo. The Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Germany and shelters over 7000 animals. The big monkey house is an attraction, that you have to see! A great place for families, and also easily accesible by underground. Not as crowded as other sights may be, but still special, is the "Rheinseilbahn", an aerial tramway crossing the Rhine River near the zoo. Especially at night you have a terrific view from the small four-passenger-cabins crossing the impressing river.

Shopping

With all the sightseeing, you must not forget shopping! Shopping is really fun in Cologne, as you have various possibilities to spend your money: You can shop in the old city center, and look at stunning old buildings while still smiling over that georgeous bargain you just bought, or you can go for a mall. In the city center you might spend your time and money on the "Hohe Straße", a pedestrian zone starting at the cathedral. You'll find everything there, from inexpensive fashion chains to designer labels and typical souvenirs. If you prefer a mall, maybe because it's raining or snowing outside, your place are the "Köln Arcaden", the Cologne Arcades, situated on the west side of the Rhine River, offering also everything you might wish!

Nightlife

Of course, the city of Cologne also has to offer an extremely cool nightlife. You can head for a club to dance, spend your evening enjoying a movie or having a lovely drink in a traditional bar. Regardless whether you prefer an expensive club or a comfortable cinema seat, if you enter the old town, you'll find a bar where can either relax or warm up. Close to the cathedral, there are many of them, and there will be one, you like! As an alternative, the area round the South Train Station is also known for its bars, and you'll find there more students, as the university is close.

Overall, Cologne is great, and you'll enjoy whatever you do there!
