Diamond Head in Hawaii

The Hawaiian call it //Le’ahi// - "brow (lea) of the yellowfin tuna (ahi)." The English name came when British seamen saw calcite crystals on the rock sparkling in the sun. The mountain is actually a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oahu where it serves as a scenic backdrop for Waikiki.

While many people are content just to see Diamond Head from a distance while the play on the beach at Wakiki, it is possible to visit the mountain. Diamond Head State Monument was named a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Today it is popular with hiker because it offers panoramic views of Waikiki and Oahu's south shore. A hike of less than one mile brings tourists to the crater's rim. Walkers pay $1 to enter the monument area; cars pay $5.

Park officials do not let hikers start up the trail after 4:30pm and visitors must be out of the park when it closes at 6pm.

The trip to the top of Diamond Head reveals a 761-foot deep crater, about 3,500 feet in diameter. Binoculars and a good camera are essential tools for this hike.

The hike includes absolutely no shade, so it's best to hike in the cool of the morning.
