Havana, Cuba

With two and a half million residents, Havana is Cuba's largest city. It is the nation's commercial hub, largest port, and capital city. Havana is not only the largest city in Cuba, it is the largest city in the Caribbean.

The city has a long history. It as founded in 1515 by a Spanish conquistador. It was originally founded on a nearby island and moved to it's currently location in 1519. Havana was mostly a base of Spanish operation in its early years. Cuba had few natural resources and Spain's conquistadors wanted the gold and gems of Central and South America. Eventually Havana gained importance as a trading post.

Havana was attacked and burnt by the French corsair Jacques de Sores in 1555. Pirate attacks like this one led to the development of the

Havana today is a colorful and vibrant place filled with contrasts: Communism in a 57 Chevy. The country is the last, staunch hold out of Cold war era political Communism. But the city is decorated with classic American cars.

Despite the rise of Communism in 1959, Havana has managed to retail its reputation for decadence and nightlife. You can still see a cabaret. Or you can visit a historic cathedral. In a city where America is the enemy, you can visit a monument to Hemmingway.

Havana may soon be a tourist destination for Americans as the new Obama Administration begins revising its Cuba policy. Politics aside, the city has a lot to offer visitors.
