Hoover Dam in the USA
On the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam sits on the border between Arizona and Nevada. When it was completed back in 1936 it was the world's largest concrete structure and the world's largest electric-power generating station. Today it is still the world's 35th largest hydro-electric facility. The dam is about 30 miles from Las Vegas. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.The dam was originally called Boulder Dam. It has been named for former U.S. President Herbert Hoover, partly because of the role he played in its construction. You can drive across the dam. U.S. Route 93 runs across the top of it. It is a narrow, two-lane road and the path to get to the dam on Rt. 93 is a difficult drive. You should be prepared for security measures as you enter the dam, including possible searches of your vehicle. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 resulted in the increased security at the dam.About a million visitors each year take a tour if the dam. While children are free, adults pay $11 for a tour of the power plant and $30 for a tour of the whole facility. Military personnel in uniform are free.Resources on the Hoover Dam
