London:Oxford Street

For centuries, the City of London has intrigued travelers from all parts of the globe. Some came to explore, others came to conquer. Today, London represents an appealing blend of all things historic and all things modern. It’s a city that manages to simultaneously look forward while looking back. Somehow, it does this without losing its soul. Within the streets of London, you’ll find the secrets of the past and the promises of the future. For those who can afford it, it’s the proverbial city with “something for everyone.”

Lest you think that England’s capital is only for highbrows and historians, London boasts a stimulating bar, club and nightlife scene for the uber-hip. Today, the sound of British techno can be heard at Victorian pubs, and experimental theatre can be seen on the stages of the city’s great Edwardian theatres. Even English food has undergone a rebirth. In the past, the concept of English cuisine was an oxymoron. Today, upscale chefs are working their magic on the old British standard fare. The transformation is quite remarkable. . So, without further ado, take our hand, and we shall lead you through the streets of London. We’ll show you some things that will truly blow your mind. First stop: Oxford Street.

Boasting over 300 high-end shops, Oxford Street has the proud distinction of being one of the busiest shopping districts in all of Europe. Between the 12th Century and 1782, Oxford Street was known as Tyburn Road. Its notoriety was based on the fact that it was the road taken by prisoners to Newgate Prison.

Today, many British chain stores hold celebrity launches at their flagship stores on Oxford Street. These include the century-old Selfridges, which is the second largest department store in the United Kingdom, as well as the upscale John Lewis, which opened in 1864.

In 2005, Selfridges hosted a rather odd event. A group of Elvis Presley Tribute Artists set the world record for the most Elvis impersonators in one location. This was an official Guinness World record set at Selfridges department store Oxford Street London.

If you’re looking for Oxford Street accommodations that are fit for royalty, consider the Cumberland Hotel. This five star establishment opened its doors in 1933, with King George V and Queen Mary attending its launch. Recently remodeled, The Cumberland now boasts a contemporary design that is embellished by original paintings and sculptures.

When night falls, young and sexy hipsters head to the Loop Bar. This four-story establishment is a combination bar, dance club and restaurant
