Machu Picchu in Peru

The Lost City of the Inca's sits at an elevation of about 8,000 feet in the mountains of Peru. Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also one of the recently-named

Machu Picchu is important partly because it was never sacked by the Spanish. As a result it gives more insight into Inca life than many archeological sites. The city was built in 1462, about 70 years before Francisco Pizarro conquered Peru. It was abandoned about 100 years later, apparently after most of the population of the city died of smallpox. The Spanish never found the city.

The altitude and location of the city make it one of the most strategic locations on earth. A 600-foot cliff sits behind the city. The city sits in a saddle between two mountains and has a great view of the valley below. The steep ascent to the city made an attack difficult.

June to August is peak tourism season for Machu Picchu, but the city is open all year.

Machu Picchu was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian from Yale University. He was led to the city by an 11 year old boy.

The stonework of the Inca was among the best in the world. They fit stones together almost perfectly and the city of Machu Picchu is a showcase for Inca masonry. The mortar-free construction of stone-to-stone buildings in Machu Picchu was more earthquake resistant - an important feture in Peru.

There are about 140 structures still standing in Machu Picchu. It is a fascinating city of homes and parks, stairs and fountains. Definitely worth visiting…
