The Mayan Ruins of Tulum in Mexico
Tulum is the site of a Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, a city whose history dates back to at least several hundred years before the arrival of Europeans. It is one of Mexico's major tourist attractions today. The Mayan Civilization in Mexico was over 4,000 years old when Columbus sailed into the Caribbean. Its classical era (about 250AD until around 900 AD) had come and gone when European's arrived, and the city may have already been in ruins. As a historical attraction, the Mayan Ruins at Tulum are fascinating. The walled city overlooks the Caribbean Sea. It sits on a seaside cliff about 40 feet above the water on the East Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While the cliffs protected the city from the sea, the landward sides of the city were protected by a wall that varied from about 10 feet to 15 feet high and was an average of around 25 feet thick. This is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Mexico. The best way to visit the sit is with a tour group because parking your own car at the site can cost you a small fortune (one report said $40). The nearby resort town of Tulum offers all the amenities of the Mexican Yucatan - sun, sand, and nightlife.Resources on the Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Mexico
