Sentosa has been built with the idea that you could entertain yourself indefinitely on this one little island without ever having to go into the city. With all the attractions in Singapore, that's ambitious. But there is a lot to do on the island. There are free shows at the Palawan Amphitheatre designed to allow contact with different birds and animals. There are a variety of these shows, with seven sessions each day. You can get up close with a Burmese python, see the macaques, or interact with a variety of parrots depending on what time you show up. There are also three free shows a day at the Magical Fountain. The musical fountain is the home to some singing characters. The 5pm show is good. The shows at 7:40 and 8:40 include lights and lasers. The island has a number of rides and experience-based attractions like the 4D Magix that makes you feel like you're in the movie. There's also a luge, a skylift, and a trapeze attraction where you can decided whether you have a future in the circus… Some of the best attractions on the island are the simple nature walks. Most are free. Among the most interesting to me is the herb and spice garden with 250 species used in cooking and traditional medicine - worth the $9 Singapore prince of admission. The Lost Civilisation and the Ruined City are modeled after archeological sites and make you think about the pre-colonial past. Singaporeans come to Sentosa for the beaches and the offshore islands. Outdoor recreation by itself is a major attraction. Become familiar with the island's offerings before you make the trip out there. It is impossible to see everything in one day and it is easy to spend a large chunk of cash getting into attractions that you hurry through in order to get to the next place. Sentosa is best seen as a planned experience over several visits. The Beaches: Sentosa has three beaches and they are easily the most accessible beaches on the island if you are staying anywhere in the downtown area. Tanjong Beach is a quiet and relaxing are most of the time. Siloso Beach is themed around sports activities like volleyball and canoeing. It is man-made and has an artificial flavor. Palawan Beach has a more secluded feel and includes beach bars and wireless Internet access on the beach.Dolphin Lagoon and Underwater World: An admission price of $19.50 Singapore (about $12 US) will get you into both attractions. Four shows a day at Dolphin Lagoon allow you to "meet" the Indo-Pacific Humpback "Pink" Dolphins. Undersea World is a large aquarium facility with a tunnel that allows you to feel like you're walking through the aquarium. There is a live reef exhibit. The facility has 2,500 fish from 250 different species. There is also a World of Crabs exhibit, turtles, and much more. The Southern Islands: Four small islands south of Sentosa provide visitors with lots to do and see. Kusu Island ("Tortoise Island" in Chinese) is home to three Malay shrines, a Chinese temple, two swimming areas, and hundreds of tortoises. St John's Island is larger (39 hectares) and has a natural coral reef. You can stay overnight in a bungalow. Sister's Islands are two small islets that provide some great snorkeling. Pulau Hantu is similar (and supposedly haunted). Camping is possible on Sister's and Hantu.Fort Siloso: "Singapore's only preserved coastal fort" according to the Sentosa Island website. The British built the fort in the 1880's to help protect Singapore Harbor. The fort opens at 10am and for about $5 US you can look over the cannons and walk through the museum. The fort became a concentration camp after the Japanese took Singapore in WWII.Resort Hotels: Sentosa Island has five hotels. Costa Sands Resort near Siloso Beach is pretty affordable and includes Malay-style beach huts with air conditioning. Rasa Sentosa and the Sentosa Resort and Spa are both 5-star resorts. Sijori Resort is located inside some renovated, pre-WWI buildings and has a historic feel. Siloso Beach Resort includes family suites, villas, and a tree house in its accommodations offerings.Sijori Wondergolf: This is 45 holes of miniature golf. There are three different courses you can play on here. The course is designed to remind you of, well, a golf course. That sounds logical until you consider that most mini-golf courses have some kind of theme and strange obstacles (absent here) like the dinosaur that eats your ball and makes you start over. The result is a fairly easy course and a relaxing game (if you don't mind the humidity). Carlsberg Sky Tower: Over 400 feet above sea level, this tower gives spectacular views of Singapore, to the north. Parts of Malaysia and Indonesia are visible from the tower. Admission is $10 Singapore (about $6 US).Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom: There are literally thousands of butterflies in a natural environment here. The butterfly house is a great place to photograph butterflies. If you're on your own, it's a relaxing place to sit and read or just relax. Wear a bright colored shirt and the butterflies will land on you. There are also spiders and scorpions, beetles and other bugs in a separate area. Admission is $10 Singapore (about $6 US).Sentosa Orchid Gardens: Another great place to just sit and enjoy the beauty, the Orchid Garden is a free attraction. Sit by the koi pond and watch the fish. The Orchid Garden here may be one of the best kept secrets on the island. If you're lucky you'll get to watch a wedding photo session at the little chapel in the garden…Comments
