South Georgia Island

South Georgia Island, together with the South Sandwich Islands, is a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. South Georgia Island is about 110 miles long and ranges from one mile wide to 25 miles wide.

There are no native inhabitants on South Georgia Island - just a few government officials and some scientists.

The UK claimed South Georgia Island all the way back in 1775. South Georgia Island was part of the Falkland War between Argentina and Britain in 1982.

South Georgia Island was a home for whalers for much of the 19th and 20th Centuries. It was abandoned in 1960 when whaling came to and end.

In recent years tourism has taken hold on South Georgia Island. A number of buildings from old whaling villages have been preserved. Cruise ships and yachts visit the island. Many of these vessels also go on to visit the Antarctic Peninsula.

South Georgia is home to a large number of sea birds - the albatross, various penguins, petrels, prions, shags, skuas, gulls and terns. The South Georgia Pipit is unique to the area. There are also seals and whales, but no native land mammals (although reindeer were introduced).
