The South Sandwich Islands
South Sandwich Islands, along with South Georgia Island, are a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. The South Sandwich Islands are about 400 miles southeast of South Georgia Island. There are no native inhabitants on the South Sandwich Islands - just a few government officials and some scientists. Whalers and seal hunters worked the island from time to time until whaling came to an end in 1960, but easier locations existed for the whalers. The climate of the South Sandwich Islands is extremely inhospitable. The total land area of the islands comes to about 1,500 square miles. Eleven islands make up the group. The British explorer Captain James Cook visited these islands in 1775 but did not stay long. The UK claimed the South Sandwich Islands in 1908. The South Sandwich Islands were part of the Falkland War between Argentina and Britain in 1982.In recent years tourism has taken hold on teh South Sanwich Islands. Cruise ships and yachts visit the islands. Many of these vessels also go on to visit the Antarctic Peninsula. The South Sandwich Islands are home to a large number of sea birds - the albatross, various penguins, petrels, prions, shags, skuas, gulls and terns. There are also seals and whales, but no native land mammals.Resources on the South Sandwich Islands
