The Space Needle in Seattle

The symbol of Seattle, the Space Needle was built in 1962 for the World's Fair held there. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high and the observation deck is 138 feet (42 m) wide. When it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River.

Besides the observation deck, the Space Needle has a rotating restaurant. The Space Needle's restaurant rotates 360 degrees in 47 minutes. SkyCity restaurant is located 500 feet up the tower. While the view is beautiful, and while eating at the restaurant gets you into the observation deck for free, Fodor’s describes the food as "overprices and often mediocre." Frommer's calls the restaurant "pricey" but doesn't comment on the food itself.

One of the marvels of the Space Needle is its safety design. It is built to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 on the Richter Scale. It is also built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour.

The Space Needle often appears in photographs to be the tallest structure in Seattle. This is because it sits on a hill. The truth is that Seattle now has buildings taller than the Space Needle.
