Times Square in New York City

Times Square is a major intersection in New York City in the borough of Manhattan. It is named after the Times Building (now “One Time Square”) where the New York Times had its offices from 1924. Times Square occupies several city blocks. It starts at Broadway and Seventh Avenue and extends from West 42nd to West 47th Streets

Times Square has been described today as "a vibrant, neon-lit area in the heart of the Theater District." But it hasn't always had a positive reputation. It was once the home of peep shows and sex shops, prostitutes and drug dealers. But its image has been rehabilitated in the last decade or so.

Most of America thinks of New Year's Eve when they think of Times Square. A huge street party takes place there on December 31st and a glitter ball dropped from Times Tower at midnight to mark the start of the new year. The party usually attracts about a million revelers to Times Square.

The neon signs and advertising seem to define Times Square as much as any other characteristic of the place. The area actually has a zoning ordinance requiring building owners to display such illuminated signs.
