The United Nations Building in New York City
The original Headquarters of the World Organization is located on an 18-acre site on the East side of Manhattan. While it is still a headquarters for the United Nations, it is no longer the only one. The U.N. has three other headquarters buildings - in Geneva Switzerland, Vienna Austria, and Nairobi Kenya. The NYC headquarters building for the United Nations was completed in 1950. It is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan. The compound overlooks the East River. It includes four main buildings: the General Assembly building, the Conference Building, the Secretariat building with its 39 floors, and the Dag Hammarskjold Library (added in 1961). Guided tours of the United Nations take place daily. They start at the General Assembly Public Lobby. In addition to taking visitors through the Council Chambers and General Assembly area, the tours feature art and other objects of interest donated by Member States. Next to the UN complex, a small public park borders the East River. The park contains several pieces of artwork donated by member nations. 'Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares' by Evgeniy Vuchetich is a signature piece in the park; it was donated by the Soviet Union in 1959. Most people think of the display of flags along First Avenue in front of the United Nations Headquarters when they think of the UN. It starts with Afghanistan at 48th street and ends with Zimbabwe at 42nd street.Resources on the United Nations Building in New York
