The U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Capitol is the building where Congress (the legislative branch of the American government) meets. it is located in Washington, D.C., on top of Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. Construction of the Capitol Building started in 1793. The building was not completed until 1811 (even though Congress actually started meeting in it in 1800). Three years after its completion, the British burned parts of the Capitol Building in 1814, as part of the War of 1812. Reconstructing the build took four years, from 1815 to 1819. The building was expanded in the 1850's. The U.S. Capitol is a huge building. It has 540 rooms and five levels. Congressional offices are on the ground floor. The South Wing of the second floor holds the chambers of the House of Representatives. The Senate is in the north wing of the second floor. The Rotunda occupies a center space in the Capitol Building; it is a circular space that serves as a gallery for paintings and sculpture of American historical figures and events. Visitors watch the proceedings of Congress from the third floor when it is in session. A fourth floor and a basement house additional office space.The Capitol Building has a visitors center and guided tours are available for 8:45am to 3:30pm. Six additional office buildings, three Library of Congress Buildings, and the U.S. Botanical Garden (American's oldest botanical garden) are also on Capitol Hill.Resources on the U.S. Capitol
