Yosemite National Park in the USA
Almost 1,200 square miles, Yosemite National Park in East-Central California is one of America's most beautiful and popular national parks. It includes the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The park is famous for its Giant Sequoia groves. The Giant Sequoias are the largest trees on earth (measured in total volume). They average between 50-85 m (165-280 ft) in height and 6-8 m (18-24 ft) in diameter. They can live as long as 3,500 years. But the fascinating thing about Yosemite is its diversity. The park ranges in elevation from 2,000 feet to 13,114 feet. It contains five major vegetation zones - chaparral/oak woodland, lower montane, upper montane, subalpine, and alpine. Most visitors arrive at the park's Yosemite Valley area and stay there. Over 95% of Yosemite is wilderness. Much of the valley floor (including various waterfalls and lake areas) are wheelchair accessible. Activities in the park include biking, hiking, camping, skiing, golf (yes, there's a course inside the park), fishing, horseback riding, rafting, and rock climbing - depending on the time of year. During the Summer (June - September) the entire park is accessible. "Winter" starts with the first heavy snowfall, often in October, and can last until May. A seven-day pass to the park is $10 per person or $20 per vehicle.Resources on Yosemite
